DAVENPORT WITHDRAWS FROM ADVANTA CHAMPIONSHIPS AND WTA TOUR CHAMPIONSHIPS World No. 4 player has season-ending foot surgery, but remains eager to return to action in 2004 ST. PETERSBURG, FL (October 15, 2003) – World No. 4 Lindsay Davenport underwent successful foot surgery on Wednesday and will miss the remainder of the season. Davenport, who was scheduled to play the Advanta Championships, Oct. 27-Nov. 2, and the coveted Bank of America WTA Tour Championships, Nov. 5-10, had surgery in the Los Angeles area for Morton’s neuroma in her left foot, an ailment that had been bothering her throughout the year. Davenport is expected to be out of action for six to eight weeks, but plans to be fully recovered in time for the 2004 Australian Open. “I’m very disappointed that I won’t be able to play in Philadelphia and the WTA Tour Championships, which is a prestigious tournament and an important one for me because it’s in my hometown,’’ Davenport said. “It was a difficult decision to have the surgery at this time because it means missing the Championships where the best compete against the best. But I’m really looking forward to getting back onto the court and being ready for the start of next season.’’ Davenport, 27, has been a consistent performer, winning one title (Pan Pacific Open in Tokyo) and reaching five other finals despite her ailing foot. She is fourth in the current Porsche Race to the Championships standings with 2,990 points and had clinched a spot in the singles draw of the season-ending Championships. She ends the season with $1,293,743 in prize money, placing her fourth on the current WTA Tour prize money list. ### The WTA Tour is the world's premier
professional sport for women with more than 1,000 players representing 76
nations competing for more than $52 million in prize money at the Tour's 59
events in 31 countries. More than 4 million people attended women's tennis
events in 2002 with millions more watching events on television networks around
the world. The WTA Tour's season concludes with the WTA Tour Championships
presented by Porsche at STAPLES Center in Los Angeles, California, November
5-10, 2003. Further information on the Tour can be found on the Internet at
