COPENHAGEN, Denmark (AP) — Denmark filed an appeal Wednesday to a ruling that kicked the country out of the Davis Cup until 2005.
Last month's ruling by the International Tennis Federation also dropped Denmark to a lower tier for refusing to play a first-round match in Algeria because of security concerns.
Denmark was supposed to visit Algeria on April 9-11, but the Danish Tennis Federation requested a switch to a neutral venue.
"Although the penalty was harsh, we still believe that it was the right decision to forfeit in Algeria," said Niels Persson, manager of the Danish Tennis Federation. "The security surrounding the game was not fit and therefor ITF should have moved or canceled the game."
The appeal is expected to be discussed at an ITF meeting in Paris in June.
