Open Water is a little independent movie about two scuba divers who get left behind by a tourist boat in the middle of shark-infested waters in the Caribbean. The acting isn't always super, but the entire movie (it's only 79 minutes long) is really just about the frightening notion that everything can go tragically wrong in a very short period of time -- and how someone would deal with that realization when death is staring them in the face (or swimming below their feet, I guess). It's been getting a lot of attention because some like to compare it to Blair Witch Project since it was shot for very little money and has an unsettling/scary tone to it -- they've even nicknamed Open Water the Blair Fish Project. But I despised the Blair Witch Project, so I don't like the comparison. With this movie, it's done with a digital camera but doesn't look like it was shot by a grade schooler, and you don't have to know anything going in to enjoy the experience... just that you'd be in real trouble if YOU were the one in the same situation that the husband and wife find themselves in here.

I thought The Village was all right, but not great. Some like to criticize it because they say it's not as good as Shyamalan's other movies. They're right, of course, as far The Sixth Sense is concerned. I really liked the clever Unbreakable (though many didn't), but hated the strained-beyond-reason Signs (which most seemed to like). I'd put The Village third in that group of movies. It's not a spectacular story, but I put it above Signs because the story is at least partially plausible and because, unlike the Gibson movie, The Village has at least one great performance -- by Bryce Dallas Howard, Ron Howard's daughter, in her movie debut as a young blind woman with, for lack of a better term, a "sixth sense" -- to keep your interest when very little appears to be happening.

Has anyone seen the previews for the "Wimbledon" movie? Is it just me, or does that look like it could be REALLY bad?

Kirsten Dunst as a professional tennis player? I don't think so.

The only way this film can be a succes is when Jelena Dokic will figure in it, i mean she doesn't play that much tournaments at the time and it would be great to see her in the movie, be the star, gain confidence and stun the tour with some great wins :) :D

I need to back to the reality

Ah Todd, I'm glad you singled out Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind as one of your favourites. I'm not sure how big it was in the States but it really didn't seem to take off over here. It's a great film though, and anything that uses a Nietzsche quote as its title deserves at least some respect. :)

As for other films I've seen lately. I guess the last one would have been I.Robot. It touched upon some fairly interesting ideas, and generally had a strong story-line (apart from a few major philosophical hiccups) but the execution was poor. Will Smith really shouldn't act in these films and waste their credibility. He was originally going to be Neo in the Matrix. Can you imagine Neo with 'bitches'? I sure as hell can't.

The Wimbledon film does look terrible. Apparently the 'stars' of the film did take tennis lessons though, but judging from the trailor, it doesn't look like they've paid off much. I think it'll be like a car crash. You don't want to watch, but you just have to.

I read where Dunst said that crew members were laughing at her when she was trying to serve on camera. :)
