The Fed Cup final will take place in September in future years, it has been announced.

The International Tennis Federation and the WTA Tour have agreed to the change which will see the women's season shortened by two weeks, thus giving players a longer end-of-year rest period.

From 2005, the Fed Cup final will be staged the week after the US Open in the calendar.

"This agreement continues the long history of cooperation that exists between the ITF and the WTA Tour," said ITF president Francesco Ricci Bitti.

"We are delighted that we were able to find a way to shorten the season, a goal for both the ITF and the WTA Tour, and to strengthen Fed Cup with better positioning within the calendar."

Larry Scott, chief executive officer of the WTA Tour, added: "The Tour and the ITF recognise the importance of shortening the season and better positioning the Fed Cup final in ways that make sense for the players and tournaments."
