Fed Cup, the largest international team competition for women in sport, will launch a new format in 2005 that incorporates the home-and-away system that is intrinsic to the success and immense popularity of Davis Cup.
Fed Cup will have a 16 nation World Group with the eight top nations competing in World Group I for a chance to lift the beautiful Fed Cup trophy while the eight nations in World Group II will compete for promotion to World Group I in the subsequent year. Eighty-eight nations will compete in Fed Cup 2005 from the elite World Group through Zonal Groups I, II and III.
From 2005, the Fed Cup Final will move from the end of the women’s professional season to the week after the US Open, as a part of an agreement with the WTA Tour.
“The changes that the ITF has made to Fed Cup come in response to the views of the players and our member National Associations,” said ITF President Francesco Ricci Bitti. “We believe that the new format can only enhance the competition and bring it closer to the very successful Davis Cup model. Fed Cup is, if not the most important, surely one of the most important team competitions for women in sport and the ITF is convinced that these changes will allow Fed Cup to maintain this position for the future.”
To celebrate the introduction of the format, the ITF decided to create a new brand for the competition that would combine a clean, modern typeface with a symbol that would express not only the grace and athleticism of women’s tennis but also the exhilaration of representing your country on the court. The brand can be used with or without the tagline, The ITF’s International Team Competition for Women.
“We are very excited about the new Fed Cup brand,” said Juan Margets, ITF Executive Vice President and Executive Director, Fed Cup. “It represents a fresh new look for the competition as we launch the new format and its dynamic and innovative style reflect the positive qualities that we envision for Fed Cup in the future.”
The new Fed Cup brand was created by Clarus Design of London and is a fitting complement to both the existing Davis Cup brand and the recently launched ITF logo. The new brand was launched today at the draw for the 2005 Fed Cup competition during the Fed Cup Finals in Moscow. The new brand will have a complete roll-out from the first round in 2005.
The Dates for Fed Cup World Group I matches in 2005 are: 1st Round - 23-24 April; Semifinals - 9-10 July; and Final - 17-18 September.
