The recent news that the ITF did not approve computer-assisted line-calling reminded me of the match that led many people to call for such a system: Serena Williams' loss to Jennifer Capriati at the U.S. Open, where chair umpire Mariana Alves not only overruled a shot by Serena that had landed in by several inches, but she did so inaudibly, so that no one knew about the overrule until she called the score before the next point.

So I can't help but wonder: Is Ms. Alves still working as a chair umpire?

I was watching the Sharapova quarterfinal tonight and just happened to notice that Ms. Alves was the chair umpire. I couldn't believe it. I thought she was banned for life from ever officiating a WTA tournament event after her knuckleheadded call against Serena at the 2004 US Open.
I can't believe that the Australian Open is so hard up for officials that they had to resort to hiring her. I hope to God that Ms. Alves is not scheduled to officiate Serena's match up with Vaidasova tomorrow night.uk1
