Czech teenager Lucie Safarova continued to prove she is one of the true up-and-comers on the Sony Ericsson WTA Tour, defeating Italy's Flavia Pennetta 63 64 in Saturday's championship final to capture her third and biggest Tour singles title at the Mondial Australian Women's Hardcourts in Gold Coast, Australia.
In the doubles final, No.2 seeds Safina and Meghann Shaughnessy routed top seeds Cara Black and Rennae Stubbs 62 63, capturing their very first Tour doubles title together in only their second partnership. The only previous time they teamed up was in 2004 at Sydney, where they reached the final before falling in three sets to Black and Stubbs. It is Safina’s third career Tour doubles title and Shaughnessy’s 13th.
