Inside Tennis Staff Playing College Tennis
Inside-Tennis Staff / 08:03pm, 24-01-2006
One of our own Inside-Tennis Staff is going back to college not to learn anything, but to play college level tennis. Senior Staff editor Frank Riley has gone back to college at the age of 43 to try his hand at the game of tennis at the USA College level. Frank is scheduled to play for the Sacramento City College Panthers in the 2006 season starting next February and going through mid April unless the team does good enough to reach the California State Championships in May. Sacramento City College is part of the Big 7 Conference in California. Frank will play both singles and doubles on the team. Wish him luck.

Frank Riley wins for the Panthers But...
Inside-Tennis Staff / 06:19pm, 09-02-2006
Inside-Tennis Staff editor Frank Riley has won his first college level singles match winning 6-1, 6-2 in less than one hour. He did not play doubles this event against Shasta College. Frank and the Sacramento City College Panthers however lost the team tennis event 4-5 to Shasta College Feb 7, 2006. Sacramento City College is part of the Big 7 Conference in California. Frank had only one comment, "I only hope they get me into the doubles matches next time so I can help the team, about the match, well, I just kept the ball moving and I made very few errors. The other player made plenty of errors, thats about how it went down". What Frank is not saying is that he totally frustrated the other player causing the Shasta team player to scream and slam his racquet a couple of times as well as having to call over the Shasta coach for a few minutes to talk about the match, it did not help as Frank just kept the ball moving on the court and placing it in places the Shasta player could not handle well. The Shasta player double faulted many times and hit long and wide all day. Now does anyone really think old guys can't play tennis, Frank is 43 years old, but...

Frank Riley injured in College Tennis
Inside-Tennis Staff / 06:20pm, 21-02-2006
Inside-Tennis Staff editor Frank Riley had won his first college tennis match just last week but this week against Sierra College Frank had just won the first set 6-4 in a featured match but early in the second set running toward a net drop shot lost his balance and took a nasty tumble into the court causing a great deal of scraps and rolled over his should but bounced back up with a nasty bloody knee. Frank finished the 3 set match but could not keep control of the match getting beat 6-4, 1-6, 1-6. Frank will recover with no major problems but it was a scary ugly fall. Sierra College beat Sacramento City 9-1. Franks team will face Sierra later in the season again. Sacramento City College is part of the Big 7 Conference in California. Frank had only one comment, "That was stupid". http://www.scc.losrios.edu/~physed/athletics/

Panthers and Riley go down hard in the Bay Area
Inside-Tennis Staff / 05:11pm, 27-02-2006
Inside-Tennis Staff editor Frank Riley lost his second match this season as his mens team the Panthers do not win a match against the Diablo Valley Hills College team. Frank struggled from his injures the week before and could not get control of his match, going down 1-6, 2-6. Frank has one win and two loses this year and looks forward to his next match this week. One good note is that the Panthers womens team won every match but one against Diablo. Sacramento City College is part of the Big 7 Conference in California. Frank had only one comment, "They have a very strong team and will be a force to deal with when the season starts this week, I just hope I can give them a better match the next time we face them, I don't think our team is that weak, we just had a rough day".

Frank Riley and the Panthers Win Big
Inside-Tennis Staff / 05:35pm, 08-03-2006
Inside-Tennis Staff editor Frank Riley won his second match this season as his mens team the Panthers smashed the Cosumnes River College team. The Panthers won by 8-1 (matches). Frank won his singles match 6-3, 6-4. Frank has two wins and two loses this year. Sacramento City College is part of the Big 7 Conference in California. Frank had only one comment, "Next time I need to finish the sets faster, I had him in each set but had trouble finishing the set, letting him win a few more games. Also, I had him 5-1 in the first set before it started to rain and had to wait for the courts to dry, that helped him by giving him time to think about what I was doing".

Frank Riley fights hard but the Panthers go down.
Inside-Tennis Staff / 06:57pm, 10-03-2006
Inside-Tennis Staff editor Frank Riley lost Thursday playing against Fresno City College in a very wild three set match that became a wild and wonderful match to watch. In the third set a line call was made that may have cost Riley the match and the Panthers another let down. Riley lost 5-7, 6-2, 1-6.
The Sacramento City College Panthers lost 3-6 (matches). The Panthers won 3 of the 6 singles matches and Riley's match would have turned the tide in singles, however, the Panthers also lost all three doubles matches. Frank has yet to be put into a doubles match even with his past doubles history. Sacramento City College is part of the Big 7 Conference in California.
Frank had this comment, "I had the first set in my hands with a big lead in the score, I think even 4-2, but then I struggled as another player was screaming about his own struggles, it took my mind off my game. Before I knew it we had 5-5 in the first set and I started to struggle and some bad luck gave that set to the other player. That hurt but it really pissed me off because it was my set.
The second set I came out on fire and went to 5-0 very fast, but then I struggled as more and more people started watching the match and people started talking. I did finish that set 6-2. I won the first game in the third set but then it was 1-1 and I made this very good shot as I ran off the side of the court and I smashed the ball down the side it landed 6 inches in and I thought I won that game but the other player called it out.
I just went crazy at that point and the call was not changed so to put it out there I felt robbed and I just played like crap after that. I had that match but let it get out of my hands. Next time the guy is mine".

Modesto College beats the Panthers 3/16/2006
Inside-Tennis Staff / 07:23pm, 22-03-2006
Inside-Tennis Staff editor Frank Riley lost Thursday playing against Modesto College in a very hard even three set match that was lost in a third set tie break. Riley lost 3-6, 6-3, 6(2)-7. Regardless of the score presented at the Panthers web site as they are wrong and Frank Riley did not play doubles as shown. Frank had the win in his hands but the other team pulled as many tricks off the court and on the court to derail that win in the third set. Frank had 5-3 in the third set but was mentally distracted over and over again by the Modesto players and coaching staff.
The Sacramento City College Panthers lost 0-9 (matches) on the mens side. On the womens side they lost 3-6 (matches). Frank has yet to be put into a doubles match even with his past doubles history. Sacramento City College is part of the Big 7 Conference in California.
Frank had this comment, "Overall that was about the best match I have ever played, except I did not get the win. In the first set I just did not warm up and it was a new player I was facing. It took a few games before I started to move normally, I went down pretty easy in the first set and the guy had a smile on his face. I decided to take the smile from his face and came out winning 5 games in a row. I pretty much played well in the second set and the match went from fun to very nasty fast as I started to roll on the guy. I won that set pretty easy 6-3, When the third set started I came out and won three games in a row. Then the other teams coach did something completely uncalled for by sending out an assistant coach to make the line calls and right away this guy calls a ball in that was out by 6 inches on my side. I went nuts and showed the guy the mark the ball made outside the line, then he changes the call. Basically they did that to upset me and it did not stop there, call after call was bad and they did everything they could to get the win for their team. I still had the lead in the match at 5-3 in the third set but with some bad luck and distractions the match was tied up at 5-5. Home court advantage does pay off and I was struggling but did get 6-5 but could not hold it and the match went to 6-6 and in the tie break things went wrong for me. Mentally I was a little rattled from the crap the other team was pulling but I still should have won that match. The other guy was a solid tennis player but next time maybe I can pay him back. I knew as a team we were in trouble, my team mates did a lot of yelling and that means they were struggling as well. The scores tell the tale of the team effort, I had the only chance to win and I did not and we lost the rest of the matches. The girls did better. College tennis is a blast but overall as a team we are a little weak this year, but never say we can't win because we can".

Panthers kill the Hawks, Riley wins easy
Inside-Tennis Staff / 07:54pm, 24-03-2006
Inside-Tennis Staff editor Frank Riley won easy against Cosumnes River College in a very easy match. Riley won 6-2, 6-2. The Sacramento City College Panthers won 6-3 (matches) on the mens side. Sacramento City College is part of the Big 7 Conference in California. Frank had this comment, "Lets face it the kid I was playing was very new to the sport and he hardly put up a fight, in fact, I felt sorry for him and, well, lets just say, I let him take a couple of games each set so he could have some motivation to keep playing, I don't like to hurt new tennis players because it is bad for the sport. But to be honest that young guy should never have been put on the court in college tennis, I hope he keeps playing and next year he will have some skill and be able to put up a fight. Over all the CRC Hawks are no match for our team but they did look better and they beat our top two guys, so that means they are getting better. Next week I will be facing two hard teams again and that will be real tennis for me. But a win is a win". http://www.scc.losrios.edu/~physed/athletics/tennis.htm

Thanks Pierre, tomorrow I am facing Fresno College last time our team went up against them it was in Fresno (their college), tomorrow it is at my college so I will be on my own courts. Also, when I played against them last time I lost in the third set and I should have won the match, so this time I am hoping for a little payback and a win, but they are a good team.

Panthers fail, Riley Wins Again against Sequoias
Inside-Tennis Staff / 03:17am, 04-04-2006
Inside-Tennis Editor Frank Riley wins again, this time against the College of the Sequoias in California, the Sacramento City College Panthers fail again going down again 4-5 (Mens Team). Riley won his match in 42 minutes with a repeat of last weeks score of 6-2, 6-2. Sacramento City College is part of the Big 7 Conference in California. Frank had this comment, "I felt very good out there on the court and mentally was placing the ball just about where I wanted it to go through out the match. The other player had really fast feet and got to some of my shots faster than I expected but I was in the right place all day and even if he got the ball back I hit it in the other corner or short. The other player just could not return my hits over and over again and it became a very easy match for me and a frustrating match for the other guy. As a team I think this was perhaps the best tennis everyone played. I was done fast so I could watch the other guys play and they had several long 3 set matches. We had a chance to win every singles match but just did not win enough of them. Overall we lost the event because our doubles teams did poorly, but we did win one of the three doubles matches. Our coaching staff seems to be set on having me play singles and not doubles and that is painful, because I could really help the doubles guys. Overall the matches were very intense and the best we have done all year. The guys played very good ".

Panthers Slammed Hard, Riley Wins against Modest
Inside-Tennis Editor Frank Riley wins again, this time against Modesto College in California, the Sacramento City College Panthers fail again going down 3-6 (Mens Team Matches). Riley wins his match in 3 hours scoring 7-5, 2-7, 6-4 in what was a hard nasty match with plenty of frustration from both players. Sacramento City College is part of the Big 7 Conference in California.
Frank had this comment, "To be honest I played very poor through out this match. I feel I am the better tennis player and when I was hitting right I won the games pretty fast. The problem was that I played pretty bad most of the match and really struggled getting any pace or rythm. I expected a very fast hard hitting game from this guy but he came out hitting very soft and short, of course that made me run up to get the ball all day and I struggled with confusion many times. I also struggled to close out the sets. In the first set I had a big lead and had to go to 7 games to win that set. In the 3rd set I was up 5-1 but only closed it out when he got to 4. In the second set I tried hard at 2-2 but then with some bad luck I was facing 2-4 and I was getting very tired. I decide to try and relax and just hit out the second set. When I got to the third set I was hitting better and I rocked him getting to 5-1 before he started to get his game together and then it was a struggle to close him out. I have to say we did not win a match against this team the last time, but this time I wanted to win bad because I lost to them in a 3rd set tie break the last time. This time it was different because it was at my school and I had plenty of support and breaks, but it was still a very ugly match and at times I was rather upset and said some bad things. I was the only one to win a match today in singles, they still kicked our butts but I won my match so at least we gave them a little something back this time. This was a big win for me even if I played like crap. But I have to hand it to Modesto, they have a good team. This was my 5th win of this season and it made me feel like the year was well worth it, next week we have 4 days of matches as the season ends so it will be hard but I am going in feeling good".

Inside-Tennis Staff / 06:09pm, 11-04-2006
Inside-Tennis Editor Frank Riley wins again, this time against College of the Sequoias in California, the Sacramento City College Panthers win 9-0 (Mens and Womens Team Matches) due to Forfeiture. Due to bad weater and a long trip to Sacramento Sequoias forfeits. Sacramento City College is part of the Big 7 Conference in California. Frank had this comment, "To be honest it counts as a win and it is my 6th win of the year but I would rather have played and won as I beat this teams player pretty easy last time". http://www.scc.losrios.edu/~physed/athletics/tennis.htm

Panthers go down to Fresno, Riley wins Again!
Inside-Tennis Staff / 10:25pm, 14-04-2006
April 11th, 2006
Inside-Tennis Editor Frank Riley wins again, this time against Fresno College, the Sacramento City College Panthers only win one match going down 1-8 (Mens Team Matches). Due to bad weather matches were not full three set matches but instead Super Pro Sets (first to 8 games). Sacramento City College is part of the Big 7 Conference in California. Frank had this comment, "This was my 7th win of the year and my 5th in a row, I am feeling very good. But I did cut my knee again in the same spot but it will heal by tomorrows Championships at least stop bleeding I hope. I don't know what to say about the team, I was shocked that no one else won. It was only 8 games and I would think luck was with someone from my team but I was the only one to win, this seems to be a normal thing lately.".

Panthers and Riley go to the Big 7 Conference Championships
Inside-Tennis Staff / 09:28pm, 16-04-2006
April 12th, 2006
Inside-Tennis Editor Frank Riley and the Sacramento City College Panthers tennis team went to the Big 7 conference Championships. College of the Sequoias, Cosumnes River College, Sacramento City College, Fresno City College and Modesto Junior College all made the trip to this tournament. For the Panthers 5 of the 6 singles players made it to the second round including Riley. One of the three Panthers doubles teams made it to the second round and qualified for the Northern California College Championships. Frank Riley had a very hard draw into this single elimination tournament, having to play in the first round the 9th seed and in the second round a top 5 seed player. In Riley’s first round he faced College of Sequoias number 2 player and tournament 9th seed. Riley however ripped through this 9th seed beating the player 6-4, 6-2, by changing the pass and drawing him closer to the net wear Riley then could pick the player apart with passing and over head lob shots. In the second round Riley played Cosumnes River College’s number 1 player and tournament 5th seed (Lopez). Riley had an amazing match with this player in a hard hitting match that had the tricky Riley going against the harder hitting Lopez. In the end Riley lost this match in front of a large cheering crowd 4-6, 3-6 to Lopez. It marked the end of a college season for Frank Riley as Lopez qualified and moved onto the Northern California Championships. Frank Riley has 8 match wins for this season, and the highest number of wins for Sacramento City College Panthers.
Riley comments: I really had a great time playing for the Panthers this year. College tennis is amazing. I had 8 wins this year and my last win and my last lose were pretty special to me because they were both great matches. Coming into the Championships I had not faced any player above the 5th position on a team but then again I have won most of those matches so going in playing a #2 and #1 player was difficult but when it all started I realized that there is not that much difference in college tennis between the positions we play and skill level. So my first match I just played my style of game and the other player never figured out what I was doing to him. In the second match I was pretty even but some luck went the other way and my body was getting a little tired, we had matches the day before and it was my 3rd match in two days. But I have to hand it to the other guy he started hammering in some pretty hard serves and he has a steady net game and gave me very few places to pass him or get by. So it was an honor to end my college season against a #1 player and have such a close match. Over all it was an amazing year for me. I won more matches than anyone on my team. I beat every team through out the year. And I played every event of the year. But most of all I have to say I really like the Panthers and the team, they are a bunch of great tennis players and everyone one of them was pretty special. I think everyone of them is a quality person. And Ya I liked being around young tennis players it was a blast. I also liked the matches everyweek and the fact that I played the same people a couple of times because I could come back the second match after thinking about the first match and playing better or different and I was able to beat the guys on the second match. I can say this college tennis is really cool and if you are thinking about it go ahead and give it a try, I am sure you will like it a lot but remember college tennis is pretty tough and most of the players you will face are pretty good tennis players. I am very happy I did it!
