Singles - Final
Yaroslava Shvedova (RUS) d. (1) Mara Santangelo (ITA) 64 64
Doubles - Final
(1) Chan/Chuang (TPE/TPE) d. (4) Hsieh/Kudryavtseva (TPE/RUS) 67(4) 62 109 (match tie-break)
Final Facts
- Shvedova won her career-first Sony Ericsson WTA Tour title as an unseeded player; en route to the title she defeated three seeds: No.7 seed Tamarine Tanasugarn (second round), No.2 seed Sania Mirza (quarterfinals) and No.1 seed Mara Santangelo (final); her wins over the No.46-ranked Mirza and the No.36-ranked Santangelo were the first Top 50 wins of her blossoming career.
- Prior to this week, Shvedova had never advanced to a Tour quarterfinal, let alone won consecutive main draw matches; her best showings were two second round runs (2005 Philadelphia, 2006 Memphis).
- Santangelo was hoping to maintain her unbeaten Bangalore record, but is now 9-1 at the event; she won the inaugural tournament a year ago (5-0) and collected four more wins this year before losing; the Italian is now 1-1 lifetime in Tour singles finals (both of her career finals have come in Bangalore).
- The team of Chan and Chuang wins its first title of the year and second overall (the duo captured Seoul in 2005); they are now 2-3 lifetime in Tour doubles finals, notching runner-up finishes at Tokyo [Japan Open] last fall and at the Australian Open and Pattaya City so far this season; those five events are impressively the pair's only five Tour appearances.
- Hsieh and Kudryavtseva were playing their second Tour event together; they fell first round at Pattaya City last week.
Quotes
Yaroslava Shvedova, 2007 Sony Ericsson International singles champion:
"I'm so excited I can't stop shaking. To win my first Sony Ericsson WTA Tour title is amazing and such a surprise. When I played Shikha Uberoi in the first round and Sania Mirza in the quarterfinals, I had to play against home favorites and I'm so far from home. But since then the fans have been wonderful, I love them and they have been on my side. Today I feel like Sania Mirza."
Chan Yung-Jan, 2007 Sony Ericsson International doubles champion (with Chuang Chia-Jung):
"We're so excited to win the Sony Ericsson International title, especially on the Chinese New Year! We're also very excited to be getting the new Sony Ericsson CyberShot phone as part of our prize."
