Singles - Final
(Q) Greta Arn (GER) d. Victoria Azarenka (BLR) 26 61 76(3)
Doubles - Final (played Saturday)
(4) Ehritt-Vanc/Rodionova (ROU/RUS) d. Domínguez Lino/Parra Santonja (ESP/ESP) 63 62
Final Facts
- Arn won her first career Tour singles title; prior to the 2007 Estoril Open she had reached the quarterfinals of a Tour singles event only once, at the Tier IV event in Basel in 2001.
- Arn is not only the oldest Tour singles titlist so far this year (28; Loit was 27 at Acapulco) but she is also the lowest-ranked (No.176; Shvedova was No.143 at Bangalore); the German is also the first qualifier to win a Tour singles title since Paszek won Portoroz last September.
- Arn almost triples her year-to-date prize money with the winner's cheque of $21,140 (her total for the year prior to this week was $12,407).
- Azarenka was playing her first career Tour singles final; prior to the 2007 Estoril Open she had reached the semifinals of Tour singles events twice, at 2005 Guangzhou (Tier III) and 2006 Tashkent (Tier IV).
- Ehritt-Vanc and Rodionova were playing together for the 18th time, but hadn't won consecutive matches in any of their first 17 appearances as a team; the 2007 Estoril Open was the second career Tour doubles title for both the Romanian (who also won 2005 Strasbourg with Spaniard Rosa María Andres Rodríguez) and the Russian (who also won 2005 Québec City with countrywoman Elena Vesnina).
Quotes
Greta Arn, 2007 Estoril Open singles champion:
"I won today with my experience. I tried to give her the balls she wouldn't like - the high balls to keep her out of her rhythm. She is young and she made some mistakes that an older, more experienced player probably wouldn't make."
"The feeling you can not explain. I am happy and just enjoying it. It's so nice. You start believing in yourself more and more, and it is just such a positive feeling; positive feelings change you."
Victoria Azarenka, 2007 Estoril Open singles runner-up:
"She was very consistent and tough, and got me out of my game. I am disappointed; I can't bring it back, though I wish I could. I was so nervous because it was my first chance for a title. I need experience on how to handle it."
