World No.1 Justine Henin how holds a perfect 9-0 win-streak at the J&S Cup, adding to the previous singles title that she won in 2005.
This year, Henin has won the singles title in three of the five events she has contested thus far.
Henin claimed her 32nd career Sony Ericsson WTA Tour singles title in her 47th career singles final on Monday.
Before this week, Alona Bondarenko had not reached a singles quarterfinal this season. She was contesting her third career Sony Ericsson WTA Tour singles final and second at the Tier II level. She won her only Tour singles title at the Tier II event at Luxembourg in 2006 and finished runner-up at the Tier IV event in Hyderabad in 2005.
Bondarenko was making her debut appearance at the J&S Cup.
An unseeded and No.40-ranked Bondarenko was the lowest-ranked singles finalist since 2002. The lowest-ranked finalist in J&S Cup history was No.162-ranked Alexandra Fusai in the tournament’s debut year, 1995.
Henin is the first player to win more than two Sony Ericsson WTA Tour singles titles this year. She moved ahead of Jelena Jankovic and Serena Williams, who hold two 2007 singles titles each.
Bondarenko was hoping to be the first Ukrainian to win a Sony Ericsson WTA Tour singles title since she won her first-ever Tour singles title at 2006 Luxembourg. Only two (2) Ukrainians have claimed a Tour singles title – Bondarenko and Natalia Medvedova.
Playing her first match against a world No.1, Bondarenko faced the sixth Top 10 singles player in her career when she opposed Henin in the singles final. Bondarenko scored her first Top 10 win in Saturday’s semis when she defeated world No.5 Svetlana Kuznetsova.
For her singles title win, Henin pocketed US$88,265 and earned 275 ranking points, while Bondarenko took home US$47,125 and gained 190 ranking points.
Doubles champions Dushevina and Perebiynis won US$27,730 for the team and each player earned 275 ranking points, while the doubles runners-up Likhovtseva and Vesnina split US$14,900 and earned 190 ranking points each.
Dushevina won her first Sony Ericsson WTA Tour trophy of any kind, while Perebiynis claimed her fifth Tour trophy, all of which in doubles. She had won before at 2002 Tashkent (with Tatiana Poutchek), 2003 Sopot (with Silvija Talaja), 2005 Acapulco (with Alina Jidkova) and 2005 Warsaw (with Barbora Strycova).
Dushevina and Perebiynis were playing as a team for the first time.
