Singles - Final
Milagros Sequera (VEN) d. Aleksandra Wozniak (CAN) 61 63
Doubles - Final (played Saturday)
(1) King/Mirza (USA/IND) d. (2) Ehritt-Vanc/Rodionova (ROU/RUS) 61 62
Final Facts:
- Sequera won her first Tour singles title; she is now 1-1 in Tour singles finals, having finished runner-up to Sharapova at Quebec City in 2003 (in that match she fractured her left ankle and was forced to retire).
- This is the first time that a Venezuelan has won a Tour singles title; Venezuelans have been runners-up on two previous occasions, at 1998 Gold Coast (Vento-Kabchi) and 2003 Quebec City (Sequera).
- Sequera is the eighth player this year to save match point(s) en route to capturing a Tour singles title; she saved two while trailing 6-4 in the second set tie-break of her first round match against Razzano (Sequera won that match 36 76(7) ret. after the Frenchwoman retired with a left hip inflammation).
- Wozniak was the first Canadian in over nine years to reach a Tour singles final (Jeyaseelan - 1998 Bogota) and the first ever from Quebec; she was trying to become the fifth Canadian ever to win a Tour singles title (after Hy-Boulais, Kelesi, Bassett-Seguso and Hetherington).
- King and Mirza were playing together for the first time; King captured her third career Tour doubles title while Mirza captured her fourth (and first outside of her native India).
Quotes:
Milagros Sequera, 2007 Grand Prix de SAR La Princesse Lalla Meryem singles champion:
"As soon as I got to the final here, the goal was to actually finish it - win or lose - and stay healthy, and do my best. Fortunately, it worked today!"
(on winning Venezuela's first Tour singles title)
"I'm overwhelmed - it makes it so much better. I'm excited and thrilled to lift up the name of my country. Hopefully there's more to come; I just want to keep improving my tennis, and keep growing as a player and a person off the court. It's a learning experience every day."
Aleksandra Wozniak, 2007 Grand Prix de SAR La Princesse Lalla Meryem singles runner-up:
"Sequera is a much more experienced player. You have good days and bad days; in my early matches I fought hard and played my heart out and was able to come through, but today Sequera was just playing too well. I was disappointed that I lost but it's only my second year, and I'll have more finals."
Sania Mirza, 2007 Grand Prix de SAR La Princesse Lalla Meryem doubles champion (with Vania King):
"I'm obviously very happy. It's always good to win a Tour title, I think more so because Vania and I were a last-minute pairing. And especially after two or three months away from the game. Hopefully I can keep improving."
