Discuss the results of Hopman Cup XX! :)

Well the first match of the Hopman Cup just finished half an hour or so ago. Meghann Shaughnessy (USA) defeated Sania Mirza (IND) 6-3 4-6 6-3. Topsy turvy match and actually quite interesting...even if there was a lot of UEs.

Meghann led *4-0 in the first set before Sania fought back before Shaughnessy finally closed it out. Then, Meghann led 2-0* in the second set before doing a few DFs to let Sania back in...Sania then broke Shaughnessy to win the second set and then led *3-1 in the final set. From then on, Meghann just played too good, but Sania's game went back to her normal erratic self.

I haven't seen either of these players play for a while and they have both improved a lot!

Well done Meghann. The Fish/Bopanna match is on now. ;)

I can't wait to see Lucie play again against Molik tonight! I haven't seen her play since she lost to Jankovic at Wimbledon...

Alicia Molik (AUS) def. Lucie Safarova (CZE) 7-5 6-2

Poor match by Lucie, Alicia played pretty good. I haven't seen Safarova play since Wimbledon...and TBH she was playing better then, compared to her match today. Alicia served like 12 aces or something which is incredible...Lucie did hit some great winners...she hit like 13 winners but 20 UEs. There were ten straight holds in the first set before Lucie gave away the break of serve. In the second set, Lucie got sloppy and Alicia really just had to keep the ball into play to win.

I hope Lucie can play better in her next match. Apparently she was unwell, and had an upset stomach, so let's forgive her. ;)

Lucie just can't find her form, can she? She's been playing poorly, compared to her past results, for half a year now. :(

Tomas Berdych (CZE) def. Peter Luczak (AUS) 7-6(7) 6-4
Luczak/Molik (AUS) def. Berdych/Safarova (CZE) 7-5 6-3

Australia def. Czech Republic 2-1

Disappointing! The Czechs suck at doubles so much. Some of Lucie's volleys were embarrassing, but she did hit some amazing passing shots.

There was an interview of her a few hours before the Molik match and she said she had a stomach issue, so she wasn't just making an excuse for losing...

I hope they can regroup and push for the spot in the final. :)

Nice to hear that there's a reason she's playing like this. Hopefully the bug will pass...

Jelena Jankovic (SRB) def. Su-Wei Hsieh (TPE) 6-4 6-4

Poor match from Jankovic...crap serving, her forhand was wayward. She hit some amazing winners of her backhand though...she blew *5-2 leads in both sets. I was impressed with Hsieh, and I think she'll be in the top 100 in no time. She just needs to improve her serve also, and be a bit more consistant. But she hit some amazing winners and overpowered Jankovic at some stages.

As for Jankovic, I think she'll get better with her next matches at the Hopman Cup. Afterall, this was her first match so I didn't expect her to be at her best. ;)

Djokovic vs. Lu up next. :D

Tati def. Dulko 6-4, 6-3. :)

Good match from Tati. She hit some great shots, but a little too many unforced after going down 2-3* in the 2nd set, but like she often does, Tati turned it around. :)

Clement lost 3 and 1 to Chela though so it came down to the mixed doubles where Tati and Arnaud won 6-2, 6-3 to secure the tie.

Allez, Tati (and France)! ;)

Well done Tati! I didn't get to see all of the match but Tati seemed to be playing pretty well...Dulko hit dome amazing backhands.

Well I attended the Hopman Cup today to see Czech Republic vs. USA. No prizes for guessing who I was supporting. :D

Tomas had a stomach bug, like Lucie did a few days ago, so the mixed doubles rubber was played second to give Tomas more time to recover for his singles. Unfortunately he had to retire in the doubles...:(

Serena Williams (USA) def. Lucie Safarova (CZE) 6-0 2-6 7-5
Fish/Williams (USA) def. Berdych/Safarova (CZE) 6-0 ret.
Mardy Fish (USA) def. Brydan Klein 6-4 6-3 [Berdych withdrew from his final match]

When Lucie lost the first set 6-0 I was like...omg...Lucie looked really nervous and Serena came out firing. Then, Lucie broke Serena to go up 3-0* in the second and kept holding serve and then broke Serena again to win the second set. Lucie hit something like 17 forhand winners which was more than Serena's forhand and backhand put together...but Lucie got nervous and blew a point to go up 5-2* in the second set. Lucie blinked and Serena took advantage. Nevertheless, I am very proud of Lucie and I really believe that she is back to her best (or close to it). She played very good.

The Czech team played bad in the doubles and Tomas didn't look 100%, and after they lost the first set 6-0 they retired because of Tomas' stomach illness, and then he apologised to the crowd which was nice, and instead Mardy Fish played against Brydran Klein, the 2007 Australian Open Boys Champion, and Fish won 6-4 6-3.

Tomas said he will be recovered in time for their final match against India.

Good luck to Tomas and Lucie! :D

Wow Chinese Taipei defeated Argentina 3-0!

Hsieh Su-Wei (TPE) def. Gisela Dulko (ARG) 3-6 7-6(2) 7-5
Lu Yen-Hsun (TPE) def. Juan Ignacio Chela (ARG) 6-3 6-4
Hsieh/Lu (TPE) def. Dulko/Chela (ARG) 3-6 6-4 7-6

Dulko led 6-3 5-2* in her match but still lost...typical. I was very pleased with the Taipei team. Hsieh is really talented and I'm now a fan of her! Lu played extremely well also, even if Chela wasn't all there. And they played well in the mixed doubles too. :)

Well tonight I'm going to the night session...Serbia vs. Argentina. :D

I'm a bit concerned that Lucie has her thigh strapped...

Here is a pic Pierre...

USA are into the final after beating Australia 2-0 (the result of the mixed doubles doesn't matter)...

Czech Republic are 2-0 up against India...

Lucie Safarova (CZE) def. Sania Mirza (IND) 6-2 4-6 6-3 (Revenge! :D - Sania beat Lucie 6-2 6-2 in the Hopman Cup last year ;))
Tomas Berdych (CZE) def. Rohan Bopanna (IND) 6-4 6-0 (Tomas was down 2-0 but then came back strong!)

I'm glad that both Lucie and Tomas were able to have a strong finish to the Hopman Cup. :)

Hopman Cup XX Final

USA def. Serbia 2-1

Well done to Serena and Mardy. Bad luck for Serbia...too bad Jankovic had to withdraw from the singles against Serena...that would have been an excellent match. ;) Serena's speech was sooooo funny. :D
